“Highlights From the First 2020 Presidential Debate
President Trump and former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. went head to head on their records, civil unrest, election integrity and more.
βThe last four years, you have promised to repeal and replace Obamacare, but you have never in these four years come up with a plan, a comprehensive plan ββ βYes, I have.β ββ to replace Obamacare.β βOf course I have.β βWell, Iβll give you ββ βWe got rid of the individual mandate.β βIβm going to give you an opportunity ββ βExcuse me. I got rid of the individual mandate.β βIβm not here to call out his lies β everybody knows heβs a liar.β βBut you agreed β Joe, youβre the liar.β βI want to make sure ββ βYou graduated last in your class, not first in your class.β βI β [laughs] β God. I want to make sure ββ βMr. President, could you let him finish, sir?β βThe question is, the question is ββ βA lot of new Supreme Court justices, radical left ββ βWill you shut up, man?β βOne of the big debates we had with 23 of my colleagues trying to win the nomination that I won were saying that Biden wanted to allow people to have private insurance still. They can, they do, they will, under my proposal.β βThatβs not what youβve said, and itβs not what your party has said.β βThat is simply a lie.β βYour party doesnβt say it β your party wants to go socialist medicine.β βMy party is me. Right now, I am the Democratic Party.β βAnd theyβre going to dominate you, Joe, you know that.β βI am the Democratic Party right now. The platform of the Democratic Party ββ βNot according to Harris.β ββ is what I, in fact, approved of.β βIs it true that you paid $750 in federal income taxes each of those two years?β βIβve paid millions of dollars in taxes, millions of dollars of income tax. Let me just say something, that it was the tax laws. I donβt want to pay tax. Before I came here, I was a private developer, I was a private business people. Like every other private person, unless theyβre stupid, they go through the laws, and thatβs what it is.β βIβm going to eliminate the Trump tax cuts.β βGood.β βAnd weβre going to, Iβm going to eliminate those tax cuts ββ βOK.β ββ and make sure that we invest in the people who in fact need the help. People out there need help.β βBut why didnβt you do it over 20, the last 25 years?β βBecause you werenβt β because you werenβt president screwing things up.β βYou were a senator ββ βYouβre the worst president America has ever had. Come on.β βYou have repeatedly criticized the vice president for not specifically calling out antifa and other left-wing ββ βThatβs right.β ββ extremist groups. But are you willing tonight to condemn white supremacists and militia groups ββ βSure.β ββ and to say that they need to stand down and not add to the violence in a number of these cities, as we saw in Kenosha and as weβve seen in Portland.β βSure, Iβm willing to do that, but ββ βThen do it.β βGo ahead, sir.β βI would say, I would say almost everything I see is from the left wing, not from the right wing.β βSo what are you, what are you saying ββ βIβm willing to do anything β I want to see peace.β βWell, then do it, sir.β βSay it. Do it. Say it.β βYou want to call them β what do you want to call them? Give me a name, give me a name.β βWhite supremacists and ββ βGo ahead, who would you like me to condemn?β βProud Boys.β βWho?β βWhite supremacists and right-wing militia.β Proud Boys, stand back and stand by. But Iβll tell you what, Iβll tell you what. Somebodyβs got to do something about antifa and the left, because this is not a right-wing problem, this is a left-wing ββ βHis own F.B.I. director said the threat is ββ Are you questioning ββ βNo, I think masks are OK. You have to understand, if you look, I mean, I have a mask right here. I put a mask on, you know, when I think I need it. Tonight as an example, everybodyβs had a test, and youβve had social distancing and all of the things that you have to β but I wear masks when needed. When needed, I wear masks.β βOK, let me ask ββ βI donβt wear masks like him β every time you see him, heβs got a mask. He could be speaking 200 feet away from β he shows up with the biggest mask Iβve ever seen.β βMasks make a big difference. His own head of the C.D.C. said if we just wore masks between now β if everybody wore masks in social distance between now and January, weβd probably save up to 100,000 lives. It matters.β βAnd theyβve also said the opposite. Theyβve also said ββ βNo serious person said the opposite.β βThe fact is that there are going to be millions of people because of Covid that are going to be voting by mail-in ballots, like he does by the way. And this is all about trying to dissuade people from voting, because heβs trying to scare people into thinking that itβs not going to be legitimate.β βAs far as the ballots are concerned, itβs a disaster. A solicited ballot, OK? Solicited is OK. Youβre soliciting, youβre asking. They send it back. You send it back. I did that. This is going to be a fraud like youβve never seen. The other thing: Itβs nice, on Nov. 3, youβre watching and you see who won the election. And I think weβre going to do well, because people are really happy with the job weβve done. But you know what? We wonβt know, we might not know for months β because these ballots are going to be all over.β βNow that millions of mail-in ballots have gone out, what are you going to do about it? And are you counting on the Supreme Court, including a Justice Barrett, to settle any dispute?β βYeah, I think Iβm counting on them to look at the ballots, definitely. I donβt think weβll β I hope we donβt need them in terms of the election itself, but for the ballots, I think so. I am urging my supporters to go into the polls and watch very carefully because thatβs what has to happen. I am urging them to do it. I am urging my people β I hope itβs going to be a fair election. If itβs a fair election ββ βYouβre urging them what?β ββ I am 100 percent on board. But if I see tens of thousands of ballots being manipulated, I canβt go along with that.β βHereβs the deal: They count the ballots. As youβve pointed out, some of these ballots in some states canβt even be opened until Election Day. And if thereβs thousands of ballots, itβs going to take time to do it. No one has established at all that there is fraud related to mail-in ballots, that somehow itβs a fraudulent process.β βItβs already been established.β βHe has no idea what heβs talking about. Hereβs the deal. The fact is, I will accept it, and he will too. You know why? Because once the winner is declared, after all the ballots are counted, all the votes are counted, that will be the end of it.β
Highlights From the Final 2020 Presidential Debate
President Trump and Joseph R. Biden Jr. had a more subdued debate, but split over issues such as the pandemic, race relations and immigration.
βIf we just wore these masks, the presidentβs own advisers have told him, we could save 100,000 lives. And weβre in a circumstance where the president, thus far, still has no plan, no comprehensive plan.β βYou also said a vaccine will be coming within weeks.β βYes.β βIs that a guarantee? Is ββ βNo, itβs not a guarantee, but it will be by the end of the year. But I think it has a good chance β there are two companies β I think within a matter of weeks. And it will be distributed very quickly.β βThis is the same fellow who told you this was going to end by Easter last time. This is the same fellow who told you that, donβt worry, weβre going to end this by the summer. Weβre about to go into a dark winter, a dark winter. And he has no clear plan, and thereβs no prospect that thereβs going to be a vaccine available for the majority of the American people before the middle of next year.β βPresident Trump, your reaction. He says you have no plan.β βI donβt think weβre going to have a dark winter at all. Weβre opening up our country. Weβve learned and studied and understand the disease.β βHe says that weβre, you know, weβre learning to live with it. People are learning to die with it. You folks home who have an empty chair at the kitchen table this morning. That man or wife going to bed tonight and reaching over to try to touch their β out of habit, where their wife or husband was β is gone. Learning to live with it? Come on. Weβre dying with it.β βI take full responsibility. Itβs not my fault that it came here. Itβs Chinaβs fault. And you know what? Itβs not Joeβs fault that it came here either. Itβs Chinaβs fault. First of all, Iβve already done something that nobody thought was possible: Through the legislature, I terminated the individual mandate. That is the worst part of Obamacare. Heβs talking about socialized medicine, and when he β and health care. When he talks about a public option, heβs talking about destroying your Medicare ββ βWrong.β βTotally destroyed. And destroying your Social Security. And this whole country will come down. You know, Bernie Sanders tried it in his state. He tried it in his state. His governor was a very liberal governor. They wanted to make it work ββ βO.K, letβs hear, letβs let Vice President Biden respond ββ βItβs impossible to work β it doesnβt work.β βHeβs a very confused guy. He thinks heβs running against somebody else. Heβs running against Joe Biden. I beat all those other people because I disagreed with them. Joe Biden heβs running against.β βMr. President, your administration separated children from their parents at the border, at least 4,000 kids. Youβve since reversed your zero-tolerance policy, but the United States canβt locate the parents of more than 500 children. So how will these families ever be reunited?β βChildren are brought here by coyotes and lots of bad people, cartels. And theyβre brought here, and they used to use them to get into our country. We now have as strong a border as weβve ever had. Weβre over 400 miles of brand-new wall. You see the numbers. And we let people in, but they have to come in legally.β βThese 500-plus kids came with parents. They separated them at the border to make it a disincentive to come to begin with. Big, real tough β weβre really strong. And guess what? They cannot β itβs not, coyotes didnβt bring them over. Their parents were with them. They got separated from their parents. And it makes us a laughingstock and violates every notion of who we are as a nation. A black parent, no matter how wealthy or how poor they are, has to teach their child, when youβre walking down the street, donβt have a hoodie on when you go across the street. Making sure that you, in fact, if you get pulled over, βYes, sir,β βNo, sir,β hands on top of the wheel. Because you are, in fact, the victim, whether youβre a person making, child of a $300,000-per-year person or someone whoβs on food stamps.β βI got criminal justice reform done and prison reform and opportunity zones. I took care of Black colleges and universities. I donβt know what to say. They can say anything. I mean, they can say anything. Itβs a very β it makes me sad because I am, I am the least racist person. I canβt even see the audience because itβs so dark, but I donβt care whoβs in the audience: Iβm the least racist person in this room.β βHe pours fuel on every single racist fire, every single one. He started off his campaign coming down the escalator, saying heβs going to get rid of those Mexican βrapists.β Heβs banned Muslims because theyβre Muslims. He has moved around and made everything worse across the board.β βI have one final question ββ βWould he close down the oil industry? Would you close down the oil industry?β βBy the way, I would transition from the oil industry, yes.β βOh, thatβs a big statement!β βI would transition β it is a big statement.β βThatβs a big statement!β βBecause I would stop ββ βWhy would you do that?β βBecause the oil industry pollutes significantly.β βOh, I see!β βHereβs the deal.β βThatβs a big statement.β βBut you canβt do that β well, if you let me finish the statement β because it has to be replaced by renewable energy over time, over time. And Iβd stop giving to the oil industry, Iβd stop giving them federal subsidies.β βOoh!β βHe wonβt give federal subsidies to the gas, excuse me, to the, to solar and wind.β βYeah.β βWhy are we giving it to oil industry?β βImagine this is your inauguration day. What will you say in your address to America, to Americans who did not vote for you?β βWe have to make our country totally successful as it was prior to the plague coming in from China. Success is going to bring us together. We are on the road to success. But Iβm cutting taxes, and he wants to raise everybodyβs taxes. And he wants to put new regulations on everything.β βWhat is on the ballot here is the character of this country. Decency, honor, respect, treating people with dignity, making sure that everyone has an even chance. And Iβm going to make sure you get that. You havenβt been getting it the last four years.β[/read]
